Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released the following statement on cybersecurity preparedness. In just the first few months of 2022, and throughout the course of the year, there has been a troubling uptick in bomb threats across the country, 49 of which targeted Historically Black Colleges and Universities and 19 against Predominately Black Institutions . Following the Secretary’s initial call for action in February, DHS created an internal task force as part of this sprint with representatives from its Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency , the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, as well as its policy, legal, public affairs, and Congressional experts. Understanding that most challenges require a more sustained effort than what can be accomplished within 60 days, the sprints are designed to leverage the Office of the Secretary to elevate existing work to address the specific challenge, remove roadblocks that have slowed down efforts, and launch new initiatives and partnerships where needed. NSA partners with schools to help cultivate the next generation of experts in science, technology, engineering, math, language and analysis to protect the nation.

The Department of Homeland Security was created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. After marking the 21stanniversary of those attacks on Sunday, the Biden administration must stop using the DHS to advance its leftist agenda through controlled content while our nuclear, cyber, water, energy, and other sectors become more vulnerable to hacking and attacks. To advance the President’s commitment, and to reflect that enhancing the nation’s cybersecurity resilience is a top priority for DHS, Secretary Mayorkas issued a call for action dedicated to cybersecurity in his first month in office. This call for action focused on tackling the immediate threat of ransomware and on building a more robust and diverse workforce.

Too much of software, including critical software, is shipped with significant vulnerabilities that can be exploited by cyber criminals. During this sprint, the Secretary will focus specifically on the need to increase the cyber resilience of the Nation’s transportation systems – from aviation to rail, pipelines, and the marine transport system. Coast Guard, and CISA are all part of DHS, which presents a unique opportunity for the Department to make progress in this area, to leverage respective best practices, and to deepen the collaboration with the U.S. This sprint is driven by the White House Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity Initiative, designed to mobilize action to improve the resilience of industrial control systems.

Bridget Beans leads the Integrated Operations Division for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency . IOD focuses integrated operations across the Agency extending to Regional CISA elements, intelligence, operational planning and mission execution with focus on risk mitigation and response efforts. Brandon Wales is the first Executive Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency , serving as the senior career executive overseeing execution of the Director and Deputy Director’s vision for CISA operations and mission support. He is responsible for leading long-term strategy development, managing CISA-wide policy initiatives and ensuring effective operational collaboration across the Agency. The Cybersecurity Operations Center shall notify the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of any severity level 3, 4, or 5 incident as soon as possible but no later than 12 hours after receiving a state agency’s incident report. The notification must include a high-level description of the incident and the likely effects.

The National Protection and Programs Directorate was formed in 2007 as a component of the United States Department of Homeland Security. NPPD's goal was to advance the Department's national security mission by reducing and eliminating threats to U.S. critical physical and cyber infrastructure. NSA Cybersecurity prevents and eradicates threats to U.S. national security systems with a focus on the Defense Industrial Base and the improvement of U.S. weapons’ security. As a part of our surveillance of medical devices on the market, the FDA monitors reports of cybersecurity issues with devices. Threats and vulnerabilities cannot be eliminated and reducing cybersecurity risks is especially challenging. The health care environment is complex, and manufacturers, hospitals, and facilities must work together to manage cybersecurity risks. CISA concurred with this recommendation and in September 2021 stated that it has conducted an initial methodological assessment of potential approaches to measure fragmentation, duplication, and overlap, as well as an initial review of a baseline analysis.
